I love how they forget to tell the public that employer contributions have been in the single digits since 1989 with six years of payments at less than 1.5% of payroll. (While sachem was giving 0% budgets to the community I know I live here too))

The largest contributions to the retirement system continue to come from investments.

In 2011 for example 90 cents on every pension dollar paid to retired teachers through the teachers retirement system came from investment income.

I'm all for open dialog but the one way talk from Fred and Newsday just isn't right.

401ks were never designed to replace pensions they were put in place to supplement social security and pension income.

This may help
Coming Year School Tax Cap Exemptions ... TRS -0
The TRS Rate INCREASE is under 2 Percentage points. (12.5%-11.11%.:1.39)
(2012-13 rate 12.5% of payroll compared to 2011-2012 rate of 11.11% equals a 1.39 increase).
Both years are double digit percentages of payroll
