It is really upsetting that our board and our administration feel that they are exempt from the governors 2% tax cap. All of the other districts are complying why isn't sachem. This community is struggling to live within our means why can't the district?

You need to understand the tax cap. !t is not something a school district is exempt from. A failed budget means the tax levy cannot be increased. The cap only changes the number of votes needed to pass a budget. The district needs 60% of the vote to pass a budget above the cap. It only needs 50% to pass a budget below the cap.

Sachem's Tax Cap is $153,835,841. If Sachem submits a budget that is $153,835,840 or less, a simple majority vote can pass it. If it fails, the school district may have a second vote, but if the second vote fails, or the district chooses not to resubmit the budget, the tax levy will be frozen at the previous year’s level of $151,669,879.

Likewise, if Sachem submits a budget that exceeds 153,835,843, a super majority vote of 60% is needed for passage. If it fails, the district may have a second vote. If the budget fails twice, or the district chooses not to resubmit, the tax levy will be frozen at the previous year’s level of $151,669,879

Furthermore, the cap applies to all propositions collectively... Put up a budget at 1.5% and two .5% propositions and all must pass with a super majority of 60% + 1

2011-12 Tax Levy $151,669,879… 2012-13 Failed Budget Tax Levy $151,669,879

Sachem sees no incentive to live within the cap in and will do all to get out a yes vote.

So the logical thing for them to do (if they want to "Kiss" as much money out of the community as possible) is to take one shot at an aboce cap budget and if that fails put up an at cap budget.
