LIPA lies cost us things money can't buy. If the EPA began a crash program today to remediate the Huntington & Brookhaven landfill plumes and radioactive soil/fumes left behind, it will take decades, countless dead and deformed children before it ends. I know because 1977 is the year my son's cancer metastasized to his brain and a division of Rockwell International began managing the infamous Hanford site. Whenever I interviewed graduate students for positions in that hell-hole, I rejected every one to spare them -- 32 years before discovering my own son was born in the fallout zone of an illegal nuclear dump[s].

Harbormaster Perks should have been given a medal and paid a huge Whistleblower reward for exposing this smuggling racket. Instead he was crucified and hit with over $400,000 in legal fees. This aspect of his story never made it into Newsday for obvious reasons -- they were sued for polluting the Huntington Landfill then settled; probably with a gag-order.
